Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions, often with artificial ventilation, in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation in the event of cardiac arrest. CPR alone is unlikely to restart the heart. The objective is to delay tissue death until administration of an electrical shock to the subjects’ heart termed defibrillation. This is accomplished with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
According to the Canadian Institutes
of Health Research, an estimated 40,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital setting in Canada each year, with between 80 and 85 per cent of these cases happening in the home and the rest in a public setting. This makes it one of the most likely medical emergencies that you will come across. The chance of surviving a cardiac arrest more than doubles when early CPR and use of AED are administered.
Training is suitable for both the workplace or general interest and includes the latest CPR guidelines.
